Is my mother tongue dying?

Filed under: India — vishwas @ 9:55 am

My mother tongue is Marathi. It’s the language of the state of Maharashtra in western part of India. I went to a Marathi medium high school. At the time I was in school most schools in Mumbai were in Marathi medium. Now a days many of them have been closed and kids go to English medium schools instead

There are more than 64 Million Marathi speakers, which is little less than French (72 Million) but more than Italian (37 Million).

In the world scene Marathi doesn’t get any recognition in terms of its art and literature like most western languages do. Unfortunately I see similar apathy in Marathi speakers as well. There is hardly any presence on the Internet for Marathi scripts (Devanagari), articles, blogs, standard fonts and editing tools. And what exists requires users to install different fonts for each site. There is no standardization across sites and tools. All are signs of a dying language.

Indian Mangoes

Filed under: India — vishwas @ 9:03 am

Alphaso Mangoes Since the day I arrived in this country (1979) I have yearned for Ratnagiri Haapoos (Alphanso) mangos. That’s why I was so happy to hear that Bush wants Americans to enjoy Indian mangoes now. New York Times appreciates them too.
